Species of the month
Common Raven (Corvus corax Linnaeus, 1758)
Common Raven is the largest passerine
bird who is known to humans from ancient times. Many if not all birdwatchers
are acquainted with the all-black colour of Ravens’ plumage which glossed
purple and dark blue especially on head, neck and chest. ‘Krook’, the Ukrainian name
of the species, is an onomatopoeic word reflecting typical Raven sound which can
be heard throughout the year.

A note about Ukrainian chalk steppe and its conservation was published
recently in international online magazine Plant Talk that supports plant
fields and ample valleys, in silence of steppe country an eye suddenly captures
something very special. Along the river voluminous white hills merge one
another. These are outcrops of a bedrock, white chalk. Here all things astonish
and stick in mind. You will never forget stocky, glaucous plants, fragrances
and strange figures made of chalk by water and wind. Numerous signs of a highland
are striking. You will see gorges and steeps, hollows and taluses. The strength
of these by no means big mountains appears in its wild and pristine scenery. We
find in our hearts to save chalk mountains in virgin state as well as their
unique plants and animals. Some are witnesses of stormy events of ice ages...
